Ashok Leyland is an Indian Automobile company headquartered at Rajaji Salai, Chennai in India. The company has its major production plant in Ennore (North Chennai). Ashok Leyland is leading India's commercial vehicle industry. Ashok Leyland is having a market capitalisation of ₹ 36,821 crores as on date June 30, 2018.

   The success story was started just after India's Independence, Ashok motors was the founding name of Ashok Leyland. It was founded by Raghunandhan Saran in 1948, a Punjabi freedom fighter. The idea of starting a service company was instigated by Indian's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

At first, Ashok Leyland was engaged in the assembly and distribution of Austin cars an England company.After few years Ashok motors was in negotiation with Leyland motors in England to assemble plants in India by Ashok Motors.After Raghunandhan Saran's died in a air crash with the help of the then Madras government now Tamilnadu government and other share holders the merge took place in 1955.In 1955, after the merger of Ashok motors with Leyland motors the name was changed to Ashok leyland.


Ashok Leyland became a global player by proving world class quality and standards to its customers. In Indian Stock Market the return given by Ashok leyland to its investors is quite decent.In 1951, 1,00,000 'B' right equity shares were offered at a face value of ₹5 which was the start of Ashok Leyland trading in Indian Stock market.

From there on,Ashok Leyland started its successful journey of manufacturing commercial vehicles. In 1975 the the collaboration ended  but the technology support was extended to Ashok Leyland till 1980. The golden years of Ashok Leyland were during this five year.

In 1987 Ashok Leyland was bought by a Joint venture between Hinduja and IVECO (a subsidiary company of Fiat) . Later on in 2007 , IVECO shares were bought by Hinduja groups which led them to be the major shareholder of AshokLeyland. Now Ashok Leyland is a flagship of Hinduja.

Ashok Leyland has already shown its presence in African Countries. Ashok Leyland has major presence in India, Europe and Middle East.In 2013 Ashok leyland launched its first car Stile in India. But the general perception of Ashok Leyland among the common public was limiting Ashok Leyland to enter car industry. As a result Ashok Leyland car sales succumbed to meagre numbers which forced Ashok Leyland to stop its production.

Recent Achievements:

After 60 years of great journey this money minting horse if not tired , In 2006 the company was awarded with TS16949 corporate certificate(ISO/TS 16949 is an ISO technical specification aimed at the development of a quality management system that provides for continual improvement, emphasising defect prevention and the reduction of variation).Ashok Leyland is the only automobile company in India to receive such prestigious certificate. 
Ashok Leyland was awarded with 2016 Deming prize for its plant operating in PantNagar where worlds first truck was manufactured other than Japan manufactured once.
