Democracy vs Republic




Democracy:
In democracy, the citizens in a democracy exercise their power by voting. Democracy doesn't have defined definition some of the important characteristics are legal equality, political freedom, rule of law.There are many types of democracy around the world let us see some of them in detail.Democracy is absolute people's rule. By the people, for the people and of the people.

Republic:Republic is also the same as that of representative democracy but it is has a written constitution in which the minorities rights are preserved.In "pure democracy" minorities rights can be abrogated but in republic it cannot be done. In democracy mostly right of religion is questioned but in republic countries the right of religion of minority is saved.In democracy the Sovereignty is held by the whole population whereas in republic it is held by few individuals.

Types of Democracy:

 Direct Democracy:
In direct democracy the people form the governing body and they decide on what has to be implemented in their state by direct voting on every policy like tax reforms, financial approvals for schools , houses etc. This type of democracy is now prevalent in Cantons of Swiss.

Representative Democracy:
It is the most prevailing type of democracy in the world. In Representative Democracy people elect their representatives from themselves. The elected representative will represent the elected people in the legislature in constitutional democracy where people elected representatives meet to form a governing body. In constitutional democracy majority wins.Thus in most of the cases in democracy minorities voice are never heard until it becomes popular . In democracy the freedom of expression, freedom of life and many other are available. This type of democracy is practised in India , Canada, US , UK etc.

Liberal Democracy:
In liberal democracy the elected representatives operate under the principles of classical liberalism.It is practiced by conducting elections for various portfolios.It can take any of the forms, it can be a constitutional monarchy or even republic or parliamentary system or presidential system or semi presidential.It is also called as Western Democracy. This type of democracy is now practiced in EU countries , Australia etc.

 There are no general types of republic. It has a common structure in which people can elect their representative within a fixed period of time and if they find him not capable of holding the post people can impeach him and remove him out of the seat.
